Our Interview Protocol (College Access)

To provide additional information regarding our interview design, the following interview standards are presented for your review. We are committed to strict adherence of the standards identified below:

  1. All interviews will be conducted with a pair of staff from www.opensourceteaching.org

  1. Our sole focus is to provide the professors who teach college freshman with a greater opportunity to specifically articulate and share their academic expectations for incoming college freshman.

  1. The only effort that will be required of professors is to describe and provide insight regarding their academic expectations for freshman, related specifically to their content area.

  1. All interviews will remain the property of the professor interviewed and will not be posted on the web without their express written consent.

  1. All interviews will be recorded strictly through the use of audio, no video will be recorded.

  2. All professors will maintain the right to anonymity. In such cases, the general region of the country will be noted (e.g. the Southeast).

  1. All interviews will be recorded in education settings of the professor’s choosing.

  1. All interviews will follow the same interview protocol and all professors will be provided with the exact questions at least two weeks before each scheduled interview.

The Exact Questions
Where applicable, questions will be further customized.

  1. Please describe your general background in education and your current role in instructing or supporting college freshmen.

  1. Based on your experience with college freshmen, what are the specific academic skills you feel all freshmen need to have to be successful in the courses you teach?

  2. If students do not have these skills, what is the best means for them to seek additional support to develop these skills in their first year of college?

  3. What do you believe are the specific areas related to your academic discipline in which students have a false understanding of the level of academic rigor required for college?

  1. Could you describe an example of what an introductory college assignment would ask a student to do and how the complexity of such assignments would change over the course of a semester?

  1. What should entering college freshman expect in regards to the nature of responsibility required to excel in your academic discipline, while enrolled in college?

  2. Are their specific actions that a student should take if they feel they need additional academic support to meet the expectations of the specific courses you instruct?

  3. What message do you have for secondary educators related to specific areas they should continue to emphasize or, perhaps, think of in a different way related to preparing high school students for college?

  1. Additional comments, observations and suggestions for entering college freshman.

Our Deliverable for Emerging Student Leaders and Learners Throughout the World. On or before Fall of 2009, all emerging student leaders and learners will be provided with a central destination to gain free, on-demand access to real-world descriptions of research from professors, authors, and artists who are the leaders in their field, in addition to a clear articulation of the expectations for entering college freshman from all types of higher ed institutions.

Beginning in the middle grades, students will be provided free access to this new media archive with precise and clear examples of academic expectations for collage and how becoming an expert in an a discipline can lead to a professional life where learning, research, and innovation are rewarded. These real world perspectives will come from professors, researchers, authors, and artists of all disciplines, captured and updated annually. We welcome all inquiries. Please send all inquiries to the attention of Art Fuller at art.fuller@opensourceteaching.org.
