Recognizing Teaching Excellence in Digital Education


The Open Source Teaching Prize is designed to inspire and challenge the nation’s future teachers and their professors to effectively integrate and apply digital media and technology into instruction, incorporating the content knowledge of the world’s leading academic researchers, executives, and professionals.



The Opportunity
    • To create interdisciplinary activities that apply digital media, technology, and web-based communication platforms for students (blogs, podcasts, wikispaces, etc.), based on content from the world’s leading scholars and professionals.

    • Content resources can be found here.



Who Can Participate

    • Pre-service teachers enrolled in a teacher training program (traditional or alternative)

    • Teachers enrolled in a graduate level teacher training / certification program

    • Teams of pre-service or practicing teachers, as part of a teacher training course

    • For professors, incorporate an educational activity / exercise related to The Open Source Teaching Prize into a relevant teacher training course, no matter the discipline. Feel free to contact marycatherine@sageleadership.org.

    • The prize is open to teachers intending to teach in public or private school settings



The Value

    • An opportunity for teachers to innovate, create, and share original lesson plans that apply instructional technology and digital media, making interdisciplinary connections.

    • An opportunity to share and learn form like-minded peers entering the profession of teaching.



Submission Guidelines
    • Send to ostprize@opensourceteaching.org

    • The submission must apply, in some manner, a sample of the content found at the following link. Interdisciplinary connections are encouraged.

    • The submission can take on the format of your choosing (e.g. digital media, youtube videolink, podcast, social network, traditional lesson plan, interdisciplinary activities, blogs, etc.)

    • The submission should include contact information related to the teacher training program in which you are enrolled, including the contact information for your academic adviser, and your preferred contact mailing address.


The Deadline
    • Submission by November 1, 2008

    • Finalists will be selected by December 15, 2008

    • The Prize will be announced on February 1, 2009



The Prize
    • All expenses paid trip to the national education conference of the teachers’ or team of teachers' choosing, including the opportunity to present work at other regional and national education conferences (all expenses paid).

    • Prominent feature on The Open Source Teaching website, including potential national media coverage.

    • All finalists will be profiled on www.opensourceteaching.org.
