Welcome to the Open Source Teaching Video Assignment Blog


Each of the following assignments are based on interviews from our
Table of Contents and OST Map. Feel free to post your activities on our assignment blog or follow the instructions as directed by your classroom teacher.

If you would like for The Open Source Teaching Project to create a dedicated assignment blog just for your class, students, school, or community related to the assignments, just send us an email at

Assignment 1 - Connections

Your interview contains many interdisciplinary connections.


The Assignment:
Take a stand or a viewpoint on a particular issue covered within the interview.

Connect the content of the interview in support of your own viewpoint.


1. Identify at least three major concepts or recurring themes emphasized throughout the interview.


2. Search the web and make a connection between at least two of these themes and a news article within a major local, national, or international media outlet (newspapers, websites, etc.).


3. Once you have found your connections, create your own news article of the interview focusing on this theme (feel free to use more then one theme). The article should be no more then 500 words. The focus of your article should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 2 - Aspirations

Your interview contains many keywords and phrases.


The Assignment:
Identify at least three keywords or phrases that are of most interest to you.

Explain why an understanding of these phrases is important to understanding more about who you are and your future aspirations.


Your response should be no more then 500 words.


The focus should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 3 - Local Global

Your interview contains a number of connections to your own local community.


The Assignment:
Identify and explain at least two characteristics or qualities of your own community (social, economic, other) that relate to this interview.

Explain how this interview helped you gain a slightly deeper understanding of how the world is becoming more global and still local at the same time.


Your response should be no more then 500 words.


The focus should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 4 - New Perspective

Your interview contains new information that can provide others with a new perspective.


The Assignment:
Identify and explain at least three new ideas, terms, or concepts that you learned from this interview.

How would you use a real-world example to explain at least one of these new ideas to one of your friends?


Your response should be no more then 500 words.


The focus should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 5 - Compare

Your interview can be compared.

The Assignment:
Identify at least two interviews to compare and contrast that are in different academic areas.

What interdisciplinary connections were you able to make
across interviews? What new insights did you gain?

How would you explain the significance of these connections to one of your peers?


Your response should be no more then 750 words.


The focus should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 6 - Qualities

Your interview conveys the professional and personal qualities of an individual.

The Assignment:
Describe at least three professional or personal qualities of the individual you studied.

What about these qualities do you feel contributed to this individual’s success?

Describe how these qualities could be applied to your own exploration of career interests or other aspects of your life in school and beyond.


Your response should be no more then 500 words.


The focus should be informative and persuasive.

Assignment 7 - Business and Industry

Your interview is focused on a particular area of research, business, or industry.

The Assignment: Pick one of the options below and complete an essay of no more than 500 words.

Background:
Often industries gravitate towards particular regions of the country (e.g. silicon valley, the auto industry, the research triangle, energy/oil, news, entertainment), but it is also common to find pockets of industry innovation.


 

Option 1: Identify and describe the focus of the largest employers (or small/medium businesses) in your town or state.

What is the scale of outreach for these employers (e.g. local, statewide, national, or international)?

Summarize the most recent news article that you can find related to one of these largest employers (or small/medium businesses)?

How does this article relate to a concept that you are currently covering in school?


 

Option 2: Many institutions of higher education have small-business incubation centers or specific programs/resources devoted to assisting people with new business ideas.

Find out about the small business incubators in your local community, region, or state.

Describe the type of information you were able to find on the web related to these type of resources.

What is your idea for a new business?

How could people and/or other companies benefit from your new idea or service?


 

Option 3: Analyze the types of industries that are most prominent among your state’s top 20 employers.

How are these industries fairing in the current economy?

Describe how at least one of these employers is approaching the challenge of globalization.


 

Option 4: Pick an industry that is of interest to you and do a search of the job openings and qualifications for that industry.

What are the general requirements for these job openings?

Identify at least two job responsibilities from within the job descriptions that you feel complement your existing strengths.

Identify at least one job responsibility which you feel you would need to improve.

What steps can you take to make improvements in this area?


 

The focus of your essay should be informative and persuasive (no more than 500 words).

Assignment 8 - Reflection

Your interview contains many opportunities to reflect on new terms and concepts.


The Assignment:
Identify at least three new terms or concepts from the interview. 

What is the context in which each idea was introduced during the interview? Pick at least one idea and describe how it relates to your own interests.

Your response should be no more then 500 words.

The focus should be informative and persuasive.
